Accusations of Harassment Against Victims in Favor of the Accused at DBC
Dhaka Bangla Channel (DBC), a news-based television station owned by fugitive Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's former Information Adviser Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, is reportedly going through a tumultuous period. Issues ranging from internal politics, staff layoffs, and even attempts at physical altercations among employees have plagued the station. Amidst these challenges, several allegations have emerged against some of the station's employees, including two female journalists, who are accused of harassing victims to defend News Editor Majumdar Jewel, who himself faces accusations of abuse.
A senior female newsroom editor, along with two other newsroom editors, lodged complaints of verbal harassment and online bullying against Majumdar Jewel. Following these complaints, Jewel, who is widely viewed as highly corrupt, was placed on temporary leave.
In response to the allegations, a committee was formed on October 23 to investigate the matter and interview the victims. The committee included human rights activist Nasim Ferdous, and representing the station were Yasmin Jahanara from the HR department, Assignment Editor Nazneen Munni, Special Correspondent Ishrat Jahan Urmi, and GM of Sales and Marketing, Rashed Alam Tipu. Although the committee was initially meant to be chaired by Rokeya Kabir, Executive Director of the Women’s Progressive Association, she was not present.
The three female victims claimed that instead of addressing their grievances, Yasmin, Nazneen Munni, and Urmi questioned the timing of their complaints, asking why they had waited so long to come forward. The committee members allegedly attempted to persuade the victims to approve the reinstatement of Majumdar Jewel rather than addressing the main issues of their complaints. According to the victims, the committee seemed more focused on discussing Jewel's potential return than on examining their allegations.
Following this incident, the three women submitted a formal letter to the authorities, reporting that the so-called inquiry was itself a form of harassment. They also expressed their lack of confidence in the committee.
Meanwhile, additional allegations have surfaced against Majumdar Jewel, including accusations of extorting expatriate representatives and accepting monthly bribes and rewards. A separate report on these claims will be published soon.
