The Dark Chapter of TCB Product Corruption Inside Ekushey Television

Ekushey Television, a prestigious institution in Bangladesh's media landscape, has become the backdrop for a corruption racket exploiting the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh's (TCB) subsidized goods, meant for the general public, for personal gains.

This report delves into the shadowy corruption involving TCB goods within Ekushey Television, implicating individuals ranging from senior journalists to office assistants.

Initial investigations revealed that Reza, an office runner responsible for handling footage, initiated this corruption scheme by acquiring a license under the name "Sunny Traders" in Ward 32 of Old Dhaka. By leveraging Ekushey Television's reputation, he created TCB ration cards under the names of some local residents but withheld the goods for personal profit.

One of the most egregious aspects of Reza's operation was the fraudulent use of Ekushey Television employees’ names—often without their knowledge. Even former employees who left the country long ago, such as Mahthir Faruqi and Kanak Sarwar, had cards issued in their names.

Reza could not have executed this plan alone. Senior figures from Ekushey Television were directly involved, including journalist Pronob Chakraborty, Akbar Hossain Sumon, and Manik Shikdar. The head of HR, Nasim Hossain, also played a key role, facilitating and supporting the distribution of TCB goods within the organization.

The corruption came to light in February of this year when Reza got into a physical altercation with studio technicians and makeup artists on the ninth floor of the television station over the distribution of TCB goods. Once again, Pronob Chakraborty and Nasim Hossain intervened to protect him.

The methods used by this corruption ring were highly strategic. Goods were transported to district towns using a courier service based in Old Dhaka and sold wholesale in local markets. Additionally, a hotel in Old Dhaka served as a distribution point where products were sold at bulk rates.

Even Ekushey Television's own cafeteria became a hub for selling TCB goods. The organization's vehicles transported goods from Old Dhaka in the early hours, which were then divided among employees.

Reza reportedly used TCB products as a means to "manage" senior officials, ensuring no one dared to question his operations. Senior journalists such as Pronob Chakraborty, Akbar Hossain Sumon, and Manik Shikdar are believed to have been the masterminds behind the racket. Their backing allowed the malpractice to continue unchecked for years.

Several other staff members were also implicated, including Kabir Mia, Saiful Islam Dilal, Shakera Aruju, video journalist Ali Ahmed Rubel, and Moniruzzaman Moni, among others.

TCB products are intended to provide essential goods to the public at fair prices. However, due to this corruption, these products never reached their intended recipients. Instead, they were turned into tools for institutionalized exploitation within Ekushey Television.

A resident of Old Dhaka, whose name was fraudulently used for a TCB card, shared his frustration: “I never received any products, yet I’ve heard that these goods are being sold elsewhere.”

The corruption at Ekushey Television raises serious questions about the accountability of both TCB and the relevant government authorities. How was this theft allowed to persist for so long without any intervention?

This report aims to serve as a call to action for protecting public rights. Immediate measures are essential to address this issue and restore trust in the system.

Demands

1. An independent investigation committee should be formed to thoroughly probe the matter.

2. Every individual involved in this corruption ring must be held accountable and face justice.

3. A technology-driven, transparent system for TCB product distribution should be implemented.

To uphold the promise of providing essential goods at fair prices to the public, authorities and television management must reevaluate their roles and take strict action.
