Statement: Attacks on Media Freedom and the State’s Irresponsibility

Bangladesh Media Monitor is deeply concerned about the recent series of attacks, vandalism, and violence targeting the offices of the country’s leading media outlets, Daily Prothom Alo and The Daily Star. These incidents in Rajshahi, Chattogram, Barishal, and Dhaka constitute a direct assault on press freedom. Such attacks not only disrupt the democratic environment but also jeopardize citizens' right to information.

The recent incident of vandalism and arson at the Prothom Alo office in Rajshahi, where attackers destroyed and burned a signboard bearing the publication’s name, is a clear act of aggression. Earlier, similar attacks and protests occurred in Chattogram and Dhaka. Particularly concerning is the violent confrontation between protesters and police in front of the Prothom Alo headquarters at Karwan Bazar in Dhaka. These events highlight the state's failure to control such assaults effectively.

We view these repeated attacks as part of a coordinated effort to suppress independent media in the country. This is a direct attack on press freedom and a violation of the fundamental principles of a democratic state.

The Role and Failure of the State

It is the state's responsibility to protect press freedom and ensure the safety of journalists. However, the failure of law enforcement to address these incidents and the government's silence are deeply disappointing. Despite repeated attacks, no effective actions have been taken against the perpetrators.

Ignoring these attacks on the media is tantamount to pushing the nation into darkness. A free press is essential for establishing good governance and providing accurate information to citizens. If the state fails to counter such assaults, it endangers not just the media but also the foundations of democracy itself.

Demands and Appeals

Bangladesh Media Monitor urges the concerned authorities to take the following measures:

1. Thorough Investigation and Justice for Perpetrators: The attacks on the offices of Prothom Alo and The Daily Star in Rajshahi and other locations must be thoroughly investigated, and the perpetrators brought to justice.

2. Ensure Media Freedom: Effective policies must be formulated and implemented to safeguard the work of journalists and prevent attacks against them.

3. State’s Responsibility Toward Media: The government must show respect for media freedom and refrain from suppressing the press under pressure from any group.

4. Protect Citizens’ Right to Information: By ensuring press freedom, the state must fulfill its fundamental duty to protect the public's right to information.

Bangladesh Media Monitor believes that a free and secure press is essential for building a strong democratic system. If such attacks persist and the state continues to fail, it will pose a significant obstacle to the country's development and governance.

We express solidarity with all media workers and advocates of free expression across the country and call for unity in addressing this crisis.
