Mamun Attempts Escape to Evade Investigation
Jarin Hayat: Recently, Abdullah Al Mamun, a special correspondent from Jugantor, appeared on a leaked list from the Ministry of Information. Currently working for the newspaper Khabar-er Kagoj, allegedly controlled by S Alam Group, Mamun is reportedly close to the newspaper’s pro-Pakistani editor, Mustafa Kamal. Sources close to Mamun have confirmed that he is attempting to flee the country with his family to avoid the impending investigation.
In August, Mamun visited Canada with his family to assess the feasibility of relocating there, while also gauging if any discussions regarding his activities had surfaced in Bangladesh. Observing a lack of attention toward his name, he returned to the country, assuming the situation was under control.
Another source revealed that Mamun is a close friend of Mahyuddin Sarkar, the executive editor of Jugantor and editor of Dhaka Post, a media outlet affiliated with US Bangla. The two friends had planned to settle permanently in Canada by 2026, which was the primary purpose of Mamun’s recent Canadian trip.
Prior to visiting Canada, Mamun had also applied for a U.S. visa. However, the shifting political landscape has since altered the situation for this media advertising mogul. The revelation of his name on the leaked list has reportedly left him in a state of panic.
A source close to Mamun confirmed that he has already sold his Dhaka apartment and some land in his locality. Under the pretense of a trip to the United States, he has nearly finalized arrangements for a swift escape with his entire family. Mamun and his family are now simply awaiting the right opportunity to flee.
Mamun’s close friend and business partner, Anwar, a former presidium member of Jubo League and a key figure in the Basic Bank corruption scandal, was recently arrested. This has added to Mamun’s urgency, as Anwar still has substantial funds held by Mamun, who essentially acted as Anwar’s cashier.
Reliable sources indicate that Khabar-er Kagoj editor Mustafa Kamal, who continues to propagate various narratives for S Alam, is facilitating Mamun’s escape by sending him on an official assignment.
Leveraging connections with the previous government, Mamun allegedly acquired public land and secured advertising contracts from multiple ministries and departments, benefiting substantially from influence-peddling. His actions earned him two suspensions from Jugantor.
Facing the potential exposure of his illicit dealings, this journalist-turned-advertising operator, Abdullah Al Mamun, is preparing to leave the country at any moment to avoid the investigation.
