BCL Leaders Accused of Assaulting Journalist at Rajshahi University

Some BCL leaders and activists have been accused of beating up a journalist after banning the playing of loud music in the residential hall of Rajshahi University (Rabi). This complaint was reported to the university administration on Sunday. The three journalist organizations on campus demanded the punishment of the accused within 48 hours._x000D_ _x000D_ VC Professor Golam Sabbir Sattar said that after hearing about the incident, I called the administration and was instructed to take the necessary action._x000D_ _x000D_ The victim in this incident is Raihan Islam, a resident student of the University’s Shaheed Habibur Rahman Hall and the university representative of the Daily Bangladesh Pratid newspaper. On the other hand, the accused are Chhatra League Vice President Al Amin Akash and Chhatra League workers Samrat, Imran, Nafeez and Amir Hamza. They are all followers of Akash; But not active in campus politics._x000D_ _x000D_ According to the source of the complaint, there was loud music playing, jumping and shouting in room number 216 of Shaheed Habibur Rahman Hall around 1.30 am on Saturday. Unable to bear the noise, residential student Shahadat Hossain came from room 315 upstairs with law student Manjurul Islam to the ground floor. Then from room number 216, the vice-president of the Chhatra League saw Akash and asked where the music was playing. On asking this, Shahdat was attacked and Akash started shouting. An argument ensues between the two. Then Imran and Samrat came out of room number 216 and at one stage of the argument, Imran slapped Shahdat’s ear hard._x000D_ _x000D_ Then Raihan Islam of the next room (number 217) went to the spot and prohibited playing loud music and tried to stop both parties. Then Imran and Samrat pushed him too. At one point Akash went to room number 210 and called other associates. Then some people including Nazim and Amir Hamza of room number 208 suddenly beat Raihan. He suffered head and eye injuries. They demanded their safety and punishment of the accused in this incident._x000D_ _x000D_ Chhatra League leader Akash said that there is a conspiracy against me. No beating occurred. Others also denied the allegations._x000D_ _x000D_ Three active journalist organizations of the campus have protested the attack on the media worker. They gave an ultimatum to permanently expel the accused from the hall within 48 hours and take legal action against beatings subject to investigation.
