Crime And Corruption

Reference provided by the police, The immature death of investigative journalism in Bangladesh

Niel, Dhaka: In Bangladesh, investigative journalism on crime has been in poor condition for a long time. In fact, when there is no proper practice of democracy, its influence also piles on journalism. as simple as that, the media is the fourth pillar of a democratic state. Since Bangladesh has gradually started to become an authoritarian or authoritarian state, the quality and style of investigative journalism in the country have taken a shaky turn and also started to change in a poor way._x000D_ _x000D_ For a decent amount of time, Bangladesh Media Monitor has been keeping an eye on the style and methods of investigative journalism of the media. Stats show that, 91 per cent of investigative reports are based only on the statements and information provided by the police. And a matter of regret that, the journalist who can contact the police first or is contacted by the police first is the best investigative journalist._x000D_ _x000D_ A news report by reporter Muktadir Rashid has been published in the English daily New Age about such kind of act; Where the reporter claimed, the police have provided the videos of the interrogation taken by the police in various media in the past few days through various WhatsApp groups. This is exactly how either the police are supplying or the journalists are collecting information from the police and publishing it, without any verification much like the police is a public relations officer._x000D_ _x000D_ We spoke to a number of lawyers on this fact, And all of whom agreed in one sentence that, the individual's privacy rights have taken a sound beating and personal safety violated by the video being circulated in such a way._x000D_ Even the judiciary is being affected. Moreover, such incidents are questioning the professionalism of journalists and police forces._x000D_ _x000D_ Secretary General of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists, Deep Azad, thinks that information or video can come from any source. But it should be verified and you or someone else can't own it or can't claim it as his/ her own. And if someone does this with will or against his/ her will then it won't be moral and can't be supported it morally._x000D_ _x000D_ He further said, in this case, there should be a declaration that this information or video (magazine or TV name) is not its own item. This cannot or has not been verified by us._x000D_ _x000D_ All of these, I mean the form of this type of journalism started in Bangladesh in 2007 when the military took the authority to rule the country and such videos were provided and circulated to incriminate various politicians._x000D_ _x000D_
