The Man Behind Press Express: Sheikh Mubin

While the propaganda machinery of Sheikh Hasina’s regime has come to light, the masterminds behind it have largely remained in the shadows. However, during our work with the Independent Journalists Forum, several of these masterminds have been revealed one after another. Following Major Afizur Rahman, we now bring to light another key figure in the propaganda machine, Sheikh Mohammad Fauzul Mubin._x000D_ _x000D_ In the propaganda world of the Awami League, Sheikh Mohammad Faozul Mubin is more commonly known as Sheikh Mubin. The easiest way to identify him is through the website "Press Express." This propaganda-driven website, reportedly operated by intelligence agencies, was owned by him. The office of Press Express and another company, "Celtron," which was also owned by Mubin, was located in Wasi Tower at the ECB Chattar._x000D_ _x000D_ According to related sources, even though Press Express is no longer active, Mubin’s company Celtron is still running several projects in various locations, including Cox's Bazar._x000D_ _x000D_ Despite lacking any journalistic experience, Mubin had easy access to everyone from Sheikh Hasina to others in power. He often introduced himself as a journalist. His associates in this endeavor included several journalists, such as Shakil and Rupa from Ekattor TV, who presented him as a journalist to Sheikh Hasina and others to advance their own interests. Almost all the propaganda videos produced and broadcasted by various media outlets during the previous government’s tenure were reportedly planned and scripted in Mubin’s office._x000D_ _x000D_ _x000D_ _x000D_ Even though Mubin wasn’t a journalist, he regularly appeared in group photos with journalists. He was also seen with figures like Bobby and Palak. Mubin allegedly amassed hundreds of crores of taka through Press Express and engaged in widespread corruption in these illegal propaganda projects. By forming close ties with printing presses, he reportedly inflated the costs of publications by up to four times._x000D_ _x000D_ Meanwhile, an anonymous military intelligence source mentioned that Mubin's cousin, Wahid Firoz Tanmoy, left for Malaysia a few months ago. Realizing the situation, Mubin used his cousin to launder a significant amount of dollars through the hundi system and other syndicates. Mubin is said to own a second home and other illegal assets in Malaysia, managed by Tanmoy._x000D_ _x000D_ The same source also revealed that Mubin swindled a large sum of money from a Brigadier General-level officer in military intelligence, which has yet to be recovered. Mubin also used pictures with Sheikh Hasina to convince people of his closeness to her and secure investments. However, according to our findings, we have yet to locate anyone who has received their investment back from Mubin._x000D_ _x000D_ _x000D_ _x000D_ He also embezzled large sums of money from various MPs under the guise of projects at the Hi-Tech Park. Our investigation uncovered that Mubin took 3 million taka from the son-in-law of Jamalpur MP Mirza Azam for this project, with a promise to return 6 million taka, but the money was never returned. We have obtained documentation related to this incident._x000D_ _x000D_ Speaking about Mubin's methods of corruption, a senior journalist compared it to the infamous "pillow scandal." For example, the cost of a single chair was inflated to 30,000 taka._x000D_ _x000D_ _x000D_ _x000D_ Furthermore, during the controversial January 7 elections, the government and the Awami League allocated 1.5 billion taka to senior journalists for promotional activities. The responsibility for this was initially given to military secretary Kabir Ahmed, who in turn handed it to the widely controversial military officer Major Afizur Rahman. Later, Rupa, Shakil, and Mubin took over, dividing the funds among themselves. Mubin, Rupa, and Shakil siphoned off a large portion of this money, becoming key figures in the propaganda machinery.
